a racy, "fish out of water" story Jul 30, 2010 _Living Dead in Dallas_ provides more detail and depth with the characters introduced in Dead Until Dark (Original MM Art) (Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood). The second book takes Sookie to Dallas, where a fundamentalist group is plotting to execute a vampire, while a series of murders in Bon Temps lead to suspicions of vampires feeding on the locals. Sookie's experiences in the big city are very much a "fish out of water" plot, something that has been done and redone and therefore didn't hold my interest. The series of murders - and its resolution similarly fell flat for me.
Relative to _Dead Until Dark_, there is more sex, and some depth of character development here, but the story as a whole wasn't interesting, as I still kept hoping that Harris would make the social commentary less obscure. Instead, it seems she wants to take her characters in a more base direction. As a result, I don't think I'll read any more of the series - they are fun, but without more substance (and I believe Harris has a great idea and marvelous venue to examine deeper issues), I'm just not interested.
Gotta Love Dallas Jul 19, 2010 Well, you really do have to love Dallas, and if you've never been there, you can now take the Sookie Stackhouse tour (on your own now, there is no tour bus...). Charlaine Harris really cranks up the Southern Vampire Mystery series a notch with this offering.
***Spoilers***
Tru Blood followers have a new perspective on the world of Sookie Stackhouse, especially at the begining of this book which provides a startling revelation. Vampires vs. Christian cults are certainly an interesting idea. Combine that with vampires seeking atonement, another secret society of shapeshifters which includes werewolves, and oh don't forget your occasional maenad and you are set for some very interesting adventures.
I enjoyed this book tremendously from start to finish as its fast pace and interesting situations made it easy to gobble up.
Highly recommended.
living dead in dallas Jul 18, 2010 Love this series...in fact the reason why i bought this book again is because i wanted them in hard back. if you love vampires and don't want a kids book like twilight then this is your book
Excellent read Jul 18, 2010 Was disappointed this title was not available for my Kindle in Australia but the printed book was reasonably priced and arrived very quickly. Great service and excellent book.
Sookie Does Dallas Jul 06, 2010 As this second volume of the SOUTHERN VAMPIRE/SOOKIE STACKHOUSE series of comic paranormal romance/mysteries begins Sookie and her vampire boyfriend Bill Compton are dispatched to Dallas on loan to the King of Texas. One of the members of the local nest of vampires is missing and Sookie's talents as a telepath are needed to locate him. Sookie is intrigued by the opportunity to travel out of tiny little Bon Temps, and live much larger than her salary as a barmaid has ever allowed her. She has her first plane ride (too bad it ended with an attempted kidnapping) and checked into a luxury hotel (a vampire hotel but a really nice one). The trail of the missing vampire lead Sookie into areas of both human and vampire experience that she would really rather have remained ignorant about and also made her realize that there was far more to the supernatural world that she had ever thought.
These are fun stories that chronicle the life and loves of sassy Sookie and her ever growing circle of friends and relatives. It is apparent that Harris has planned this series at least several books ahead. Clues are dropped in early stories that will not be brought into play until much later in the overall story. So while the books can be read and enjoyed independently for maximum enjoyment it would be best to begin with DEAD UNTIL DARK and proceed in order.
This is the basis of the HBO TRUEBLOOD series. There are some differences between the books and tv show, some characters are added or altered, sequences of events are changed etc. While most of the main plot elements remain the same it really is not possible to switch back and forth between the two story lines seamlessly, nor would reading or watching one necessarily spoil the plot for the other.
